Acne and Skin Care Defined

What exactly is acne? Do a couple of zits qualify as a case of acne or do you have to have a lot of zits? The answer is that the occasional pimple or zit does not constitute a case of acne. Although zits do seem to have the ability to appear at the most inopportune times, they are not acne.

The dictionary defines acne as: “an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands, characterized by comedones and pimples, esp.on the face, back, and chest, and, in severe cases, by cysts and nodules resulting in scarring.” The anatomical definition of sebaceous glands is: “small subcutaneous glands, usually connected with hair follicles. They secrete an oily semi-fluid matter, composed in great part of fat, which softens and lubricates the hair and skin.”

Real acne is actually a disease of the skin. Acne is treatable and although it can be embarrassing and cause great emotional distress, it is not fatal. There are new and more effective treatments being sought by researchers and great advances have been made in the treatment of acne in the last few years.

Years ago, when a person had acne, they were pretty much stuck with the problem. There were very few treatments available and medical science didnt even consider acne as a disease. It was thought that acne was the direct result of a diet that was high in fat or sweets. That is no longer the case.

Acne is most often associated with the teenage years but it can develop in adults as well. Even after acne has been healed, there can be scars left that are unsightly and can cause patients distress. New skin resurfacing treatments that have been developed over the last several years have proven very effective in, if not completely removing acne scars, at least in diminishing their appearance and severity.
