The 84th Academy Awards

This year’s Academy Awards will mark the 84th year that this event has been held. The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences puts on the annual ceremony, and the best films of 2011 will be honored. Also known as The Oscars, this year’s Academy Awards will take place on February 26, 2012 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California. I mean where else would an event honor movies occur? Hollywood, of course! The Oscars will be televised live by ABC. Alternatively, you can watch academy awards online. The nominations were handed out on January 24, 2012.

Many people do not know that Eddie Murphy was scheduled to be the host of this year’s ceremony. But, the producer Brett Ratner resigned over some remarks made in a rehearsal, which in turn caused Murphy to resign his position, as well. Enter old reliable, Billy Crystal, and Brian Grazer will be the show’s producer. This is not Crystal’s first Academy Awards, as he has been the host on 8 previous occasions.

The most famous of the categories is Best Picture, and the academy awards nominees include The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life, and War Horse.

Of course, many people watch the ceremony to see which actors and actresses will take home an Oscar. Some of this year’s nominees include George Clooney, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, Glenn Close, Meryl Streep, and Michelle Williams.

The history of the academy awards is a very storied one. Once an Oscar is won it is a great lifetime achievement for any actor, director, producer, or filmmaker. And it is usually a very lucrative award as well.
